How lumpy is a 6 months food meant to be?

My little boy has been on solids since he was 4 months. Now he is no 3 meals a day that he is 6 months. I normaly do my own dinners. I have just doen a new lot and have left them with some lumpy bits in it. But we are on holidays next month and I have got some jars to take. I tried him on one the other day but he started to choke because of the lumps. What can I do to get him used to to the lumps?
